The government agency tasked with fighting identity theft has lost two government laptops containing sensitive personal data. The irony does not end there, as the data compromised consisted of individuals who were being investigated for identity theft and fraud. The data consisted of names, addresses, Social Security numbers and financial account numbers.
The laptops were stolen from two attorneys for the Federal Trade Commision on June 13th, who were filing a lawsuit and had relevent evidence on their laptops. They had kept their laptops in a locked car which was broken into. According to the FTC this did not break any of their endpoint security policies, which leads one to wonder if they actually have one.
In the last few months that brings to 5 endpoint security data breaches amongst government agencies that is expected to cost the government millions of dollars.
